How meticulous are those online mortgage calculators like this one: http://www.mortgage-calc.com/mortgage/si mple_results.html? I differentiate this one is pretty basic, but can i expect to pay pretty close to what the computer spits out?

Answer: You will pay positively what the mortgage calculator pops out. However there are a couple things to look out for. Many mortgage calculators suppose you are putting 20% down. So make sure you change the amount you are putting down.

My monthly takings is 5500 before taxes. I have no debt (i even own my car) and I have 20k to put down and it is telling me that I can only get a loan on 200k lineage????? I know a friend of mind who makes less than I do who got a loan for 300k only just

Answer: To be fair, if the calculator says you can afford 200k, in reality it's possibly 150k. They overinflate the numbers in the hopes that you'll go in and try to get a loan.
